The Behler Chelonian Center is located in Southern California, where the climate is ideal for most of the species in our captive management program. The Center borders the Los Padres National Forest which encompasses 1.75 million acres of the Coast and Tranverse Ranges and stretches 220 miles from north to south. Thirty-four reptiles and 14 amphibian species are found within the Forest.
The property consists of seven buildings, including two fully automated temperature and humidity-controlled greenhouses, a nursery with advanced incubation facilities, a commercial kitchen, and two
additional tortoise houses. Also on the property are the original 1920’s house for guests, a second guesthouse with a library focused on herpetology, and staff offices. The grounds offer a combination of plants from desert and Mediterranean biomes
with expansive outdoor compounds and ponds, allowing the animals outside access much of the year.
To achieve the highest standards of care, species’ habitats and biology have been extensively researched, including in situ observations, and every effort is made to mimic the biotic and abiotic conditions critical to the health and wellbeing of each animal.
